Pick to Light / Put to Light System
CASE STUDY – GA PET FOOD PARTNERS
The customer approached Sorion to design and build a standalone label storage and retrieval solution
Customer: GA Pet Food Partners
Industry: Pet foods
Location: Lancashire, UK
THE CHALLENGE
GA Pet Food Partners have a printing operation that generates batches of labels as unique customer works orders are processed.
This requires a storage and retrieval facility so that the labels can be easily retrieved when required and also limiting damage to the labels.
THE CUSTOMER
GA Pet Food Partners provide private label pet food solutions for partners across the globe.
THE APPROACH
The Sorion team designed and built a standalone Pick to Light and Put to Light solution including a sorting rack consisting of 120 individual slots, each slot representing an order.
Each compartment was fitted with a simple pick to light module with a domed LED indicator light / task confirmation button. The confirmation button has a multicolour option so that specific colours can be assigned for the sorting and picking process.
THE PROCESS
The station is controlled by Sorion’s Sextans process control software, running on a touch screen PC. The PC also displays further instructions for the operator.
Label storage
When a batch of labels to be sorted arrives at the Put-to-Light station, the operator will scan each item individually.
For each label scanned the light module on the correct slot is illuminated, allowing the operator to place the label in the right location every time.
Once the label is placed, the operator will confirm task completion by pressing the button on the light module. This process is repeated until all labels are consolidated in the correct slots.
Label retrieval
The label retrieval method is the reverse of the label storage process.
The operator scans the works order and the system will illuminate the slots where the labels need to be picked from.
RESULTS
The pick to light solution engineered by Sorion provided a simple and efficient solution for the customer’s label storage and retrieval process.
The system has a flexible configuration and is easily scalable to allow for the customer’s changing requirements.
